Vision Unveiled For “Mosaic Of Habitats” In The New York/New Jersey Estuary
The article, “Vision Unveiled For ‘Mosaic Of Habitats’ In The New York/New Jersey Estuary,” provides a good overview of the restoration plan for the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary. Of the Hackensack Watershed, MCT’s focus area, the Meadowlands are within the estuary. The plan is quite ambitious… short and long-term goals include creating 1,200 acres of coastal wetlands by the year 2015 and 15,200 by 2050; enhancing four or more islands for water- birds by 2015 and all islands by 2050; creating or restoring 250 acres of coastal and maritime forest by 2015 and 1,000 by 2050; and creating 500 acres of oyster reefs habitats by 2015 and 5,000 by 2050.
